King's Cross Station
London
Architect: John McAslan + Partners
Client: Network Rail
Project completion: 2012
Almost one million passengers pass through King's Cross Station each week, many hurrying to catch trains, others carrying heavy luggage. When Network Rail (NR) decided to redevelop the historically important but run down station one of their main concerns was that it should be easily accessible for all. Camden Council, the local planning authority, reinforced this aspiration by requiring NR to produce an Access and Mobility Scheme and appoint an Inclusive Design Champion. David Bonnett Associates (DBA) took on that role in 2008, working closely with Network Rail and the design team until the station opened in 2012.
An important element of the Inclusive Design Champion role was to convene and consult with the King's Cross access group. The complexity of the design proposals meant that DBA had to advise on the preparation of high quality consultation materials, including tactile plans that could be understood by all. Consultation covered all aspects of the scheme, ranging from proposals for the new train shed footbridge to the new piazza in front of the station.
The input of DBA was extensive, ranging from encouraging Camden to provide blue badge parking to advising on a floor finish that was non-slip while providing adequate tonal contrast. The station opened, in time for the London Olympics, to general acclaim. Our continuing involvement has allowed us to advise the station team on necessary management practices.
