Burntwood School
London
Architect: Allford Hall Monaghan Morris
Client: Wandsworth Borough Council
Project completion: 2015
Burntwood School had already developed an Action Plan to promote Disability Equality when they appointed the Design Team for the major rebuilding of their school.
The school insisted that plans for the new buildings would provide equality of access for all and resolved to review provision annually to ensure that diverse needs are appropriately supported.
The transformation of the School reinvents a modernist education campus for 2,000 pupils and 200 staff. The 1950s school was set out in a campus style, within a mature landscape. Sir Leslie Martin, architect of the Royal Festival Hall on the South Bank, had designed the swimming pool & gymnasium building as well as an elegant assembly hall. These were retained while all other buildings were demolished to make way
for six new teaching pavilions.
The school has achieved its aim of providing an accessible environment, at the same tine garnering numerous design awards including the prestigious Stirling Prize.
